Until now, it was a mystery as to how the invasive jellyfish that have been arriving along the San Francisco Bay and spreading to other areas in the state ended up in the bay.
Officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said Tuesday that the culprit may be the recent passing of two weather patterns that allowed warmer water to carry the jellyfish southward and then northward.
"It is very likely that the jellyfish are moved up the Bay to more southerly water along with the thermocline," said Ed Hutchins, the CDFW's aquatic invasive species program manager.
Hutchins said the agency is exploring possible links between the jellyfish invasions and ocean temperatures in San Francisco Bay, which he called a "huge puzzle piece."
The jellyfish infestation has had a devastating effect on commercial and recreational fisheries in the bay. Officials are concerned that other, more harmful species could be transported to other areas in California, and Hutchins said state biologists are working on finding out whether this is the case.
The rare starfish was first discovered in the bay in December and has been growing in abundance. The jellyfish was first spotted in the bay in March. Both have left the immediate bay area and have been found in the Delta.
"We know the starfish are moving and a piece of that is due to the water movement," said Mark Harmon, director of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. "There is no concrete link that I know of to the jellyfish and the thermocline."
The jellyfish are so new to the bay that the agencies that have studied them have been trying to figure out exactly how many are floating about. While Hutchins said he knows the number of jellyfish "is in the thousands," it could also be many more.
